The opportunity arose for Michigan State and Gonzaga, and given Tom Izzo's Spartans program was previously involved in a similar game, the schools pursued this opportunity with cautious optimism. Every precautionary effort will be put into avoiding any kind of weather impacting the game.

"The experience we had in 2011 when we played North Carolina on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson was one of the most humbling experiences of my career. Obviously, we wanted to win and any game against a program like that is very special, but to me, the game was about so much more than just a win or a loss.

It was one of those games that, even though the Spartans lost 67-55, the players would remember for the rest of their lives. Not often you will see a college basketball game played outside on the deck of a ship with the President of the United States in attendance.

The previous five were part of the "Carrier Classic" series in 2011 and 2012. Michigan State's game against North Carolina on Nov. 11, 2011, in San Diego was the first of its kind and even had President Barack Obama aboard.

On Nov. 9, 2012, Florida and Georgetown met on an aircraft carrier off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. Their game was canceled at halftime, as condensation caused by humidity made the court too slippery. The same conditions also led to the cancellation of Marquette-Ohio State that same day off the coast of South Carolina.

Two days later, on Nov. 11, 2012, Syracuse and San Diego State completed a game on the USS Midway off the coast of San Diego. With this matchup finalized, the Michigan State-Gonzaga tilt will be one of two men's college basketball games on Nov.

Things don't always go to plan though. Over the course of secret military aircraft development, information can get out through leaks, whether deliberately staged or not. Sometimes a necessary distraction from true intentions and other times a complete fluke that was never meant to happen, these 10 military aircraft were meant to be kept secret, but ended up being revealed to the public through leaked information:

In the video, released on Monday evening, a young naval pilot from an aircraft carrier aviation unit is ordered to undertake a new, challenging task and walks towards what appears to be a stealth fighter jet.

In 2018, China seemingly confirmed that its upcoming H-20 stealth bomber would leverage a flying wing design reminiscent of America's own B-2 Spirit. In a video released by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), an aircraft that looked like a flying wing sat under a drop cloth in a strikingly similar presentation to Northrop Grumman's own SuperBowl commercial featuring the forthcoming B-21 Raider.

These, however, are pretty much the same aircraft but designed to be deployed differently. A new variant would cost billions of dollars to develop and would be redundant. So, the contract is most likely designed to develop peculiar adjustments for the needs of a specific customer, much like the F-35I "Adir" variant developed for the Israeli Air Force.

India wants to offset China's strategic edge in stealth aircraft that was created by the J-20 and is being compounded with the J-31, and is invested in fielding a low-observable jet that can stand and swing with its rival's.

In 2016, the picture of the B-21 above was released showing the basic form of the B-21. This year, a more detailed rendering of the aircraft was released by Northrop Grumman (top picture of this entry).

While details are slow to emerge, Northrop Grumman's leak of the B-21's true form came without US air force comment or explanation, and is the closest and most detailed look the public has received into the future of American stealth bombers.

While recently, a video was released by Russia showing the drone taking its first flight, the first true glimpse of the Okhotnik-B came in the form of leaked photos. Developed in secrecy starting in 2011, the Okhotnik-B's true form was revealed when pictures were posted to Russian social media in 2019 showing the mysterious aircraft being towed at an air force base Russian President Vladimir Putin was visiting.

Today, America's lead in low-observable aviation remains palpable, with two operational stealth fighters and the world's only fleet of heavy payload stealth bombers, but the rest of the world is working towards closing the gap. Thirteen American allies now operate their own F-35s, and several new stealth platforms are in active development within the secretive confines of R&D facilities all around the globe.

China was the second country to field its own stealth aircraft, thanks in no small part to a great deal of espionage and intellectual property theft. Today, there are at least two more stealth aircraft in development, headed for Chinese runways in the years to come.

The F-35A is the conventional take-off landing variant that is used or will be used by most of the current and future customers. The F-35B is the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) version specifically designed for the United States Marine Corps but also used by the British Royal Navy and Italian Navy.

Closing the list is the F-35C, which is the aircraft carrier version of the stealth fighter jet. The B-21 was designed with that competition in mind. Northrop Grumman's rundown of the new bomber's abilities said that while adversaries "continue to invest in and develop advanced weapons," the B-21 will allow the US to penetrate enemy air defense and hit targets "anywhere in the world."

While the initial phases of development were kept in the dark, come 2011, full pictures of the J20 were suddenly leaked to Chinese message boards and newspapers. With no effort by the Chinese state to censor or prevent the photos from spreading, it's theorized that the leaks were intentional to debut and show off the aircraft, but regardless, were the first looks the world got at the new fighter.

A Pentagon assessment released in 2021 indicated that this new stealth aircraft likely meets or exceeds China's intended aims, although it appears as though this platform will be closer to the B-2 in capability than America's forthcoming B-21.

The wreckage was destroyed with explosives by special forces, but the tail section remained and was found to be unlike anything confirmed to exist in America's arsenal. With photos of the tail section leaked (pictured above), connections were made to the previous plans and concepts for a stealth Black Hawk, and were furthered by yet another leaked photo (first in this entry) that showed a mysterious, stealthy looking Black Hawk

up close. Currently, 13 countries operate more than 700 F-35s stealth aircraft from about 27 bases worldwide. The U.S. military alone is planning to purchase about 2,500 aircraft of types, with 1,700 F-35As for the Air Force, 350 F-35Bs for the Marine Corps, and 270 F-35Cs and 70 F-35Cs for the Navy and Marine Corps, respectively.

Instead, the pilots and crew "ditched at sea, bailed out, or crash-landed in China," according to the National Museum of the US Air Force, many reaching safety with the help of Chinese citizens. According to the museum, as many as a quarter of a million Chinese citizens were later executed by the Japanese as punishment for assisting the Americans.

The Air Force on Friday unveiled its newest stealth bomber aircraft, the B-21 Raider, in Palmdale, California. Built by Northrop Grumman, the bomber was named in honor of the "courageous spirit" of airmen who carried out the surprise World War II Doolittle Raid.

This fighter is also expected to fly alongside drones, and will almost certainly place a large emphasis on increased payload capacity and unfueled range, all with an eye toward offsetting the strategic advantage China's long-range anti-ship missiles have created in the Pacific.

Initially, a partnership between France and Germany that began in 2017, Spain recently joined this program that aims to field a 6th generation fighter akin to those under development within allied nations like NGAD and Tempest.

Similar to those platforms, this next-generation stealth aircraft will leverage drone wingmen that take their cues from a crewed primary fighter. I fully agree, china likes to cheat and copy their way into the conversation and Russia is a corrupt paper tiger that lacks everything including the military capable of flying and maintaining anything 5th gen nevermind 6th.

America will always have an edge in air superiority! Rather than risk the aircraft being revealed through conditions out of CIA and government control, the White House announced the existence of an ultra-fast experimental aircraft in 1964 and leaked information on the armed YF-12 interceptor prototype - omitting any mention of its role in

developing the SR-71 and A-12 spy planes. This acted as a distraction from the SR-71 and A-12's true purpose and scale of production, helping to maintain the spy plane's secrecy for decades. In July 2021, Russian aircraft manufacturer UAC unveiled the nation's newest stealth fighter, the LTA Checkmate, at the MAKS air show at Ramenskoye airfield near Moscow.

The unveiling received massive global exposure, with Russian officials claiming this new fighter would not only compete with stealthy platforms like the F-35, but also do it for as little as $30 million per airframe. The KF-21 made its maiden flight in July of 2022 and conducted its first supersonic test flight just last month.

The KF-21 Block I aims to field an air superiority platform to replace very dated F-4 and F-5 fighters still in service, with Block II aiming to increase the platform's capability set to make it a truly multi-role platform.

Developing a new aircraft for the military is an immense undertaking. As some of the ultimate machines, aircraft require intense engineering for every minor part, and as a cohesive unit can take several do-overs to get right.

If said aircraft is public knowledge, this isn't the biggest deal, nor test flights, and any developments can be conducted and announced on demand. It's all moot. Next week the impotent clod in the white house will demand all US craft combat racism by converting to electric, at which time they'll fly about 30 feet before they run out of juice.

Rushing to see the mysterious aircraft, close up pictures of the MIG-25 were taken by reporters, and leaked to the public. Also, the USA was able to fully dismantle and study the jet, solving the mystery of the MIG-25's capabilities and purpose.

But, in the world of classified military projects, the development of new aircraft is made even more intense thanks to the veil of secrecy required at each step of the way. Whether it's for stealth technology, or a new weapons system, secret aircraft are desperately kept a secret to stay ahead of the competition and keep their new developments out of enemy hands.

This program has been underway since 2010 and Turkey intends to unveil its first completed prototype sometime this year. Turkey had plans to purchase F-35s to operate alongside its homegrown fighter, but after those plans fell through, concerns were also raised about the nation's ability to source American-made 5th-generation engines.

As such, this aircraft may be forced to fly with older engines, compromising some degree of its low observability. Turkey hopes to have this fighter in service by 2028, but that timeline is admittedly optimistic. "We wanted [to] ensure the aircraft had a strong name airmen could take pride in, especially those who will have the opportunity to fly and maintain the B-21," Lt.

Mustang 2 Aircraft - But none of that really matters. The Mustang II has a great name, a great look, and flies as beautifully as anything I've ever been lucky enough to lay my hands on. The controls are light without being twitchy, and responsive without being unstable.

It just feels right. The RV-7 is a nice airplane, no doubt. But next to the Mustang it looks like a Cherokee (Hershey bar wing, anyone?). And I'm not oblivious to real-world concerns. Speed ​​is not the only factor.

The Mustang II climbed at 1,700 feet per minute with two big guys at 6,000 feet, and it stalls gently. It does require a long runway, but 90 percent of those in the United States will be just fine.

About 13,300 Merlin-powered Mustangs were produced in the United States. Though production contracts were canceled at war's end, the P-51 remained in service with the Air Force for several years thereafter. P-51s, some taken out of "mothballs," were used for ground-attack missions early in the Korean War (1950–53).

Mustangs also were used by Nationalist forces in the Chinese Civil War and by Israel in the 1956 Sinai invasion. P-51s continued to serve in less-developed countries into the 1960s and last saw combat in Salvadoran hands during the 1969 Soccer War with Honduras.

Who among us flies at full throttle, with the prop at max rpm, the mixture full rich, at low altitude, except during takeoff and initial climb? Unless you're racing at Reno, your typical flight profile probably involves a climb, a reduction in prop/engine rpm, and leaning the mixture.

When you do those things, the Mustang II's speed advantage over the RV-7 becomes a rounding error. We rejoin, move into a line-abreast formation, push the throttles and props all the way up, and pitch for VY.

At 7,500 feet, the two airplanes are almost perfectly matched with identical climb rates of 1,700 fpm. They are wing tip to wing tip, and there is no discernible movement between them. We produce high-quality engine cowls that are lightweight and have excellent strength characteristics.

As far as I'm concerned there are two legitimate types of airplanes—those that go fast, and those that go low and slow. If you want to get up and go somewhere, then by all means get on it.

The crippling losses which the U.S. bombers had previously suffered thereafter drastically reduced: in October 1943 as many as 9.1 percent of the Eighth Air Force bomber sorties credited with attacking their targets had failed to return, and a further 45.6 percent had been damaged.

In February 1944 the corresponding figures fell to 3.5 percent and 29.9 percent. From that point, Germany was effectively under round-the-clock bombardment. Though fewer in number, the P-51 could penetrate deeper into German airspace than the other U.S.

fighters and was better in air-to-air combat; it thus played a disproportionately large role in the defeat of the Luftwaffe. Like all great things that go fast, it's loud, somewhat cramped, and visibility on the ground is awful.

If the speed doesn't make you feel like you're on a rocket to space, strapping into it will. I felt like an astronaut who needs help from the white-coated engineers handing me my gear—not to mention that, while on the ground, the seating position has you looking more at the stars than the earth.

Both airplanes are equipped with parallel-valve Lycoming IO-360 engines and constant-speed Hartzell propellers; in addition, their empty weights (1,070 pounds for the Mustang and 1,100 pounds for the RV–7) are closely matched. With two pilots and about 25 gallons of avgas in each airplane, it's a pretty realistic comparison.

Back in the traffic pattern at Maryland's Frederick Municipal Airport, that stability allows a normal, full-flaps approach at 65 KIAS and a ground roll with light braking of less than 1,000 feet. The Mustang approaches at 85 KIAS and its ground roll is nearly double.

Far more meaningful are the criteria that comprise what Vans Aircraft Founder Dick VanGrunsven calls “total performance.” Those considerations include short-field performance, aerobatic capability, ground handling, control harmony, comfort, visibility, and fuel efficiency. Some of these qualities are hard to quantify, but they add up to versatility, and that's where the RV series shines.

No other general aviation aircraft—experimental or FAA-certified—can match RVs across the full performance spectrum. The handling qualities of both airplanes are exceptional with well-balanced, authoritative controls over each airplane's full range of performance. The control forces in the RV-7 are light;

the Mustang's are slightly heavier with a crisp, sports-car feel. Which style a pilot prefers is a purely subjective matter of personal taste. P-51, also called Mustang, a single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft originally designed and produced by North American Aviation for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and later adopted by the U.S.

Army Air Forces (USAAF). The P-51 is widely regarded as the finest all-around piston-engined fighter of World War II to be produced in significant numbers. Our core material is a modern three dimensional fiberglass core material that increases strength and imported from the producer in Europe.

The two airplanes stay together for about five seconds, but then the Mustang starts pulling away. After 20 seconds, the Mustang is holding a substantial lead and nine-knot indicated airspeed advantage over the RV–7 (155 KIAS to 146, or 174 KTAS to 164) and the expanding gap between the two airplanes confirms the ASI readings.

Our cowlings for the Mustang II fit 320 and 360-390 forward-facing injected or updraft injected/carbureted engines. This cowl requires an extended hub propeller or spacer when used with a 360-390 engines. If you use a 320 with a 360 engine mount you will also need an extended hub propeller.

Kin to the Midget Mustang, this frisky tail-dragger seats two in side-by-side fashion and was developed as a cross country/sport plane. There is enough panel to accommodate full IFR gear. The Mustang II is a slightly slower ship using a 150-hp Lycoming engine.

Construction is all-metal with stressed skin. There are no complicated fittings or parts that require special skills or tools. The Mustang II can be equipped with the 180-hp Lycoming and Ray-Jay Ri 0325 turbocharger to offer 250-mph cruise with 30-gph economy.

And while we're talking about intangibles, here's the biggest: The RV community of builders and pilots is an actual community. Nearly 8,000 RVs have been built and flown around the world, and the people who own, build, and fly them are among the most knowledgeable, skillful, friendly, cooperative, and active people in aviation.

They happily share information and provide mutual support. They also do more actual flying (as opposed to hangar flying, coffee drinking, or donut eating) than any other aviation group I know. These two popular kit airplanes are both built to specifications—and they're extremely well-made and well-cared-for examples.

(In fact, Carlo Cilliers, owner and builder of the Mustang II, won a workmanship award for his airplane at EAA AirVenture 2012. And RV–7 builder, owner, and pilot Bill Cloughley meticulously followed the Van's Aircraft plans to make his airplane light

and straight.) Finally, at about 68 KIAS, the Mustang's tapered wing stalls and the airplane rolls about 30 degrees to the left before recovering. The RV–7—with its lighter wing loading and rectangular, Hershey-bar wing shape—is still solid and stable and about eight knots above its stall speed.

(And the RV–7's stall, when it does come, breaks crisply and straight ahead.)

Nesher Aircraft

Nesher Aircraft - The Neshers proved to be good fighters and overcame their adversaries (MiGs and Sukhois) with relative ease. The first aerial victory of a Nesher took place on January 8, 1973, when 4 Neshers from the "First Fighter" squadron escorted F-4 Phantoms into Syria to attack a terrorist base.

In an engagement with Syrian MiG-21s, 6 MiGs were shot down, two by the Neshers. The Neshers did not just go out on interception missions: they also carried out several attack sorties in the Golan Heights and on the southern front.

Nesher Aircraft

The action was intense, with every pilot carrying out numerous sorties every day. In 1975 the first Kfirs entered service, and the Nesher was gradually relegated to a less central role. All the Neshers were concentrated in two squadrons, and were transferred - in late 1976 - to Eitam Airbase, which had been newly dedicated in the northern Sinai.

Design And Development

The Nesher was identical to the Mirage 5, except for the use of some Israeli avionics, a Martin-Baker zero-zero ejection seat, and provisions for a wider range of AAMs (Air-to-Air Missiles), including the Israeli Shafrir heat

-seeking missile. Fifty-one Nesher fighters (Nesher S) and ten Nesher two-seat trainers (Nesher T) were built in all. Israel had to replace more than 60 aircraft lost during the Six Day War and the War of Attrition which followed.

Before the war Israel began the cooperation with Dassault to build the Mirage 5 and it was eventually built by Israel and named Raam in Hebrew (thunder). Officially, Israel built the aircraft after obtaining complete blueprints.

However, some sources claim Israel received 50 Mirage 5s in crates from the French Air Force (AdA), while the AdA took over the 50 aircraft originally intended for Israel.[2][3][4] In the 1979 contract with IAI, the Argentine Air Force stipulated that the Daggers would be equipped with new avionics and HUD systems to take them to the Kfir C.2 (and beyond in some subsystems) standard.

The program, named Finger, was underway in 1982 when the Falklands War broke out. With the war over, as some of these systems were made by the British Marconi Electronic Systems, they needed to be replaced after an arms embargo was imposed by the UK.

The replacement of such systems took the planes to the final Finger IIIB standard mainly by replacing the British equipment with French-built Thomson-CSF.[8] Also known as "Ha'Tsipor Barzel" (The Iron Bird Squadron), this unit formed in 1976 with Mirage/Nesher aircraft from 101 sqn, and was

later supplemented by 117 sqn aircraft. Originally based at Eitam, the unit moved to Matred Ramon in April 1982, when Eitam was handed back to Egypt under the Camp David Agreement. It is reported that the unit then converted to Kfir C-2s, but this is unconfirmed.

The Israel Aircraft Industries Nesher (Hebrew: נשר, "Vulture" - often mistranslated as "Eagle") is the Israeli version of the Dassault Mirage 5 multi-role fighter aircraft. Most were later sold to the Argentine Air Force as Daggers, and later upgraded as Fingers.

During the 1982 Falklands War, they were deployed to the southern naval airbase of Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego, and an airfield in Puerto San Julián and despite the distance to their targets and lack of aerial refueling capability, managed to make 153 sorties against both

ground and naval targets on the 45 days of operations. In the last role, they damaged HMS Antrim, Brilliant, Broadsword, Ardent, Arrow and Plymouth.[6] Eleven Daggers were lost in combat (nine by AIM-9L Sidewinders fired from Sea Harriers and two by surface to air missiles).[7]

The Nesher enjoyed great success in the Yom Kippur War with dozens of Egyptian, Syrian and Libyan aircraft shot down, the "First Fighter" squadron alone scoring 59 victories for the loss of only 4 planes. The Nesher squadron from Etzion was one of the leading squadrons, tallying 42 kills without a single plane lost.

By the end of the war Nesher 510 had shot down 13 enemy aircraft while 561 had shot down 12. According to the statistics published after the war, there were 117 dogfights in the course of the Yom Kippur War (65 over Syria and 52 over Egypt).

Nesher production was phased out from 1978 to make way for an improved Mirage derivative that had been planned in parallel, in which the Atar engine was replaced by an Israeli-built General Electric J79 engine, the engine used on the American Lockheed F-104 Starfighter

and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighters. The result was the IAI Kfir. The Mirage III, although an excellent platform, suffered from a number of faults in its engine and radar system. Furthermore, in the clear skies over the Middle East there was no use for the entire avionics package provided by the French manufacturer.

In January, 1969 the French government arms embargo on Israel (on the eve of the Six Day War and after the Israeli attack of the airport of Beirut, in 1969) prevented the first 30 Mirage 5 aircraft (which were already paid for by Israel)

plus optional 20 from being delivered and cut off support for the existing Mirage IIICJ fleet. Dassault Aviation had developed the Mirage 5 at the request of the Israelis, who were the main foreign customers of the Mirage III.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) wanted the next version to have less all-weather capability in exchange for improved ordnance carrying capacity and range as the weather in the Middle East is mostly clear. and finally with the embargo following the Israeli commando raid on Beirut airport in December 1968 (following an attack by Palestinian terrorists on an El Al aircraft).

France refused to deliver the 50 Mirage 5 aircraft already ordered by Israel and instead used them to arm its own air force. In the late 1960s the close ties between France and Israel began to cool down, first with the French weapons embargo during the Six Days War (the Arabs were armed by the Soviets so the embargo mainly hurt Israel)

The first Nesher prototype flew in September 1969, with production deliveries to the IAF beginning in May 1971, ending in February 1974. These aircraft performed well during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, claiming over a hundred kills.

Under the codename "Nesher" (Vulture) Israel Aircraft Industries secretly began the construction of the new fighter in its Ben Gurion Airport facilities. On March 21st, 1971 the first aircraft took to the air and supplies to the IAF began by May of the same year.

At first some disappointment was voiced over the aircraft's air-to-air characteristics but these were gradually silenced and finally disappeared after the aircraft's excellent performance during the Yom-Kippur war of 1973. In total 51 single seat Nesher A's and a further 10 double seat

B's were built before production ended in 1974. Survivors of Israeli aircraft were refurbished and exported to the Argentine Air Force in two batches, 26 in 1978 and 13 in 1980, under the name Dagger, comprising 35 Dagger A single-seat fighters and 4 Dagger B two-seat trainers.

The Nesher (Vulture) was the first fighter to be produced in Israel, thus paving the way for the appearance of more advanced planes like the Kfir and Lavi. The IAF saw the Nesher as a temporary expedient for reinforcing Israel's air power, a sort of intermediate phase before the more advanced models made their entry.

When the better planes arrived upon the scene, the Nesher was phased out. The Neshers served in the IAF for just 10 years, and reached the apex of their glory in the Yom Kippur War, during which they scored numerous kills.

In 1981, the Kfir had supplanted the Nesher in Heyl Ha'avir, and the Neshers were renovated, for sale overseas. Exported as the "Dagger", 35 single seat examples were sold to Argentina along with 4 two seaters.

These took part in the Falklands War of 1982, attacking the British task force sent to recapture the islands, facing Sea-Harriers during the landing at San Carlos. There were still 25 Daggers in service with the Argentinian Air Force (FAA) in 1993.

The Nesher had simpler avionics than the Mirage IIIC, although it was found by Israeli pilots to be slightly less maneuverable. However, it had longer range and bigger payload. The reduced maneuverability did not prevent the Nesher from giving a good account of itself in air combat during the Yom Kippur war.

When the Yom Kippur War broke out, in October of 1973, the IAF had 40 Nesher planes in its ranks in four squadrons, serving in the First Combat Squadron and in the two new squadrons. The type equipped 4 fighter squadrons - "First Fighter" squadron, "First Jet" squadron, "Hornet" & "Guardians of the Arava".

They formed a new unit, 6th Air Group, and were immediately enlisted with the help of the 8th Air Group (Mirage IIIEA) and the Peruvian Air Force, already a user of the Mirage 5, due to the escalating crisis with Chile of that year

. After contacts with Israel Dassault agreed to develop a new aircraft, based on the Mirage III but following Israeli guidelines and requirements. The Mirage 5 was conceived to answer Israeli requirements. The Mirage 5, equipped with the same airframe as the Mirage IIIC and engine as the Mirage IIIE, was conceived as a daylight ground strike fighter (radar replaced by a simplified navigation and attack system).

This aircraft was radarless, but flew higher and faster and also contained more fuel than its predecessor. First flown on May 19th, 1967, this aircraft was to become the Mirage 5 and Israel ordered 50 of the type.

Although they were originally intended for attack missions, in the course of the war the Neshers were primarily used in air-to-air combat. The IAF command decided to use the Phantoms, Skyhawks and Sa'ars against ground targets, and assigned the Mirages and Neshers the task of fighting enemy aircraft and establishing air superiority over the battle zones.

One of the first victories of the war was not an aircraft but an AS-5 Kelt air to ground missile launched against Tel-Aviv by an Egyptian Tu-16 Badger on the first day of the war, October 6th, 1973. When Libyan Mirage

5s entered the fighting all Israeli Mirages and Neshers were marked with large yellow triangles bordered by a thick black frame to prevent a case of mistaken identity. At least two Mirage 5s were shot down by Neshers, as well as an Israeli Phantom shot down by mistake, the navigator and the pilot, a former Nesher squadron commander, parachuting to safety.

The first Nesher landed in the First Combat Squadron's base at Hatzor in May of 1971, with veteran test pilot Danny Shapira at the controls. In the months that followed, additional Nesher planes equipped this squadron, making up for the insufficient number of Mirage IIIs and raising the number of serviceable planes in the squadron.

When the rate of production picked up at the Nesher assembly line at IAI, two new squadrons could be established, based solely on the Neshers. The first new squadron inaugurated 'Etzion Airbase at 'Bik'at Hayareakh' ('Valley of the Moon') near Eilat, in September of 1972, and the second was founded in March of 1973 at Hatzor.

Between 1978 and 1981 the Mirages and Neshers were retired from Israeli service, replaced with Israel's next locally built fighter, the Kfir. The Kfir was a significantly more advanced plane than the Nesher, boasting better performance as well as more sophisticated systems, and upgrading the Neshers was not deemed to be a worthwhile investment.

The need in Israel to replace more than 60 aircraft lost during the Six Days War and the ongoing War of Attrition that followed prompted Israel to privately acquire the Mirage 5 blueprints from Dassault and to secure the engine blueprints through espionage.

Israel Aircraft Industries secretly began the construction of the new fighter in its Ben Gurion Airport facilities. Production began in 1969[5] with the first empty cell (no weapons, no electronics, no seat, no engine) delivered directly from Dassault Aviation because spare parts were not subjected to the embargo.[1]

The first Raam A was delivered in May, 1971. In November, 1971 the plane was renamed Nesher.[1] This was bad news for the Israeli Air Force, who needed the new Mirage to compensate for the losses of the Six Day War and was still using the origin of this version derived from the Mirage III.

Israel then decided to build this plane (Raam A and B project)[1] as it had the necessary plans, although Israel did not officially obtain a manufacturing license.
